diplomatic explanation

i asked a friend of mine...
apa bezanya, embassy, high com, consulate

dia kata.. in brief,
begini..

Embassy and High Commission are the same
the only different is whether and because
it is at a commonwealth country

example..
in Singapore and London.. High Commission of Malaysia
in Jakarta and UAE.... Embassy of Malaysia

Wisma Putra / Kementerian Luar Negeri is the HQ
Embassy / High Comm is the main office..
Consulate General is a branch
Consulate is another/smaller branch

instances...
Embassy of Malaysia in Bangkok
Consulate General in Songkhla

Embassy in Jakarta
Consulate General in Medan
Consulate in Pekanbaru and Pontianak..

Embassy in Abu Dhabi
Consulate General in Dubai..

Embassy / High Comm will be headed, respectively
by an ambassador (duta besar)
or a high commissioner (pesuruhjaya tinggi)
then it will have
minister counsellor or/and
first secretary or/and
second secretaries or/ and
third secretary
some embassies also have attaches..

consulate general is headed by
a consul general (konsul jeneral)
then it will have
a consul as its second man

consulate is headed by
a consul (konsul)

embassy / high comm
will always be located
in the capital city of the country

only one embassy per country in each state
but, more than one is allowed for consulates..

illustration...
Indonesia got an embassy in KL,
consulate general in kota kinabalu
consulate in Penang and johor bahru

Malaysia got an embassy in washington
consulate general in new york
consulate general in los angeles

now i get it...

What's a cda then?

In the case of the US - they dont use 1st secretary nor consuls. They have a different system.

Their system has the Ambassador followed by the Charge' and then section heads are known as the Counsellors.

But then again each embassy is different as it depends on the size of the Embassy.
